This quote is important to the novel because it reminds the reader of Jim. Sadie thought any man that knew how to wear
a hat, wanted something for himself and if he did that he compared to Jim, which was a good thing in the eyes of Sadie.
2. "You scared to love cause you scared to lose." Sadie pg.14
This quote is important because it illustrates how Sadie was before she met Jim. She was scared to love because she was
scared to lose someone important to her, not receive the love in return, or get her feelings hurt.
3. "Long as you got something of love to hold onto to you a person of wealth. Only
folks really own theyselves the ones who know what they worth." Sadie pg.17
This quote is significant because although Sadie had lost Jim physically, she didn't lose him mentally because she had
something to hold onto him by. Also, Sadie is basically telling Marianne that as long as she doesn't forget the people that
she loves and where she came from she will know who she is inside.

The signifigance of this quote was to tell the place of blacks in the slavery society. Although, blacks did all of
the work and were very important to the flourishing of the plantation, they were not paid and whites prospered from the work
of blacks.

This quote is significant because it shows how blacks were treated like animals although they did all of the plantation
duties. Also, it shows how slaves got accustomed to being beat and no longer felt the pain, they just endured it.
6. "Just maybe spring a good time to make a move. Baby still small enough to sleep on my back. Mas ain't
got the money to hire no dogs to come after us." Sadie & Jim pg.76
This quote is significant because it shows how well thought out escaping had to be. Also, it shows how much time and planning
was put into it to have a positive outcome.
7. "Mas always say he free us when he die. He looking so frail we thinking that's out freedom." Sadie
pg.86
This quote signifies that although Master Watson said that he would free the slaves upon his dying day, the slaves knew
that it was less than possible. Just seeing him looking frail, that was the closest they would ever get to their freedom.
8. " I ain't want my children to know I scared so I looks up instead of down when he talk to us. He look at
me too." Sadie pg.90
This quote signifies the strength that Sadie had to possess to just look into Master Stevens eyes. She knew that if she
wasn't strong that her children wouldn't be and they wouldn't be afraid.
9. "After Mas Stevens take away my Jonnie I ain't good for nothing. Can't works can't thinks. Banes come at me with
a whip I ain't even feels. The others good to me though. They just put they hands on me and give me they care. I just like
one of them now." Sadie pg. 125
This quote is significant because it shows how when the other slaves actually see Sadie getting misstreated with their
own eyes, they sympathize with her. All the time they thought Sadie was being treated differently, they knew that she was
still their equal.
10. "When you old and wore you think on me and all the others love you. You close your eyes and feel our love
coming up behind you. That's all you got in this world." Sadie pg.161
This quote is significant because without love, Sadie wouldn't have gotten past all of the problems and moved on. She tells
Marianne that to live your life, you need to have love.
