This novel takes place in the 19th century. In the first setting of the novel, Sadie is sitting with her granddaughter Marianne Libre talking, but the location is not disclosed. The first plantation Sadie talks about is in Virginia. Nextly, Sadie talks about going up the Mississippi River to St.Louis, Missouri. Her master sells Sadie down river to New Orleans, Louisiana. After slavery is over, they go the Shreveport, Louisiana and live her life there with Papa Duban.
