Knife: This knife symbolizes one of the connections between Sadie and her mother. Sadie's mother (Liza) stole the knife from her mistress and used it for doctoring. Also, the knife serves as a link between Sadie and Jim, because she was the one who cut his umbilical cord at his birth.

Bowl: This bowl serves as another link between Sadie and Liza. This was a Congo Bowl which was used to mix up cures in. When Liza died, Sadie took the bowl and made it her own for making cures. Eventually, this bowl gets broken by Master Stevens, so she has only a piece of it left in her jar.

Button: This button is symbolic of Lizabeth (Sadie's 1st child). It was given to her by Widow Douglas ( Miss Watson's sister). Actually, the button comes from a coach driver's jacket, because Lizabeth had big eyes for it and Widow Douglas felt sorry for Lizabeth. Lizabeth, was born with hearing ears. As a child, she caught the scarlet and she became deaf. This is the reason why Widow Douglas felt sorry for her.
