Characters:
  • Sadie: The main character of the novel and the protagonist. Sadie was born into slavery on a Virginia plantation. During her journey in this novel she carried things of importance with her and eventually put them in a jar. During her stay on Master Watsons plantation, she marries Jim, and has two kids with him. Eventually, she is sold to a plantation on New Orleans, and has five more kids with a Creole man named, Andrew. After slavery she settles in Shreveport, Lousiana and changes her name.
  • Jim: Jim was the first slave born in Clear Creek, so he was considered lucky. As a child, Jim was taken care of by Sadie and Cora. Eventually, when he became older, he showed interest in Sadie. Also, he was given special privledges because he could see things. He had two kids with Sadie named Lizabeth and Jonnie. When Master Watson died, he was taken in by Miss Watson, while all the other slaves were sold to Master Stevens' plantation. While living with Miss Watson, Jim ran away with Huckleberry Finn and visited Sadie occasionaly. Meanwhile, while Jim was away with Huckleberry, Sadie was punished. Twenty years later, he found Sadie in Louisiana, after she changed and she told Jim that she couldn't be with him because she was married. That was the last of Jim in the novel.
  • Marianne Libre: This was Sadie's granddaughter. Her decisision whether to stay with Nanna Sadie or go with Chas Freeman begins this novel and is the reason why Sadie tells her story. Marianne was born at Smithfield Quarter (a plantation the family had a contract with). Marianne's mother left her at age eight to travel with church folks and never came back for her.
  • Liza: Liza was Sadie's mother. She was born the same year that Jefferson bought Louisiana (Louisiana Purchase,1803). Liza was her family's first healer on the west side of the Atlantic. Sadie was taught by her mother the art of making cures and remedies.  While staying a night in the woods,on the way to Clear Creek, Liza died of chlorea.
  • Lizabeth: Sadie's first child and daughter. She became deaf when she caught scarlet fever. Although, she was deaf, she could pray.
